This landscaping job in West Byfleet, just to the northeast of Woking in Surrey, was for a young married couple who had been living in West Byfleet for 5 years. Their previous garden consisted of two separate small patches of grass interspersed with white stone flowerbeds, a boarded-up pond, and two old patios connected by a well-used path.
Their garden was looking tired and disjointed, and the various sections and borders made it seem smaller than it actually was. It also wasn’t child-friendly, with no one section big enough to kick a football around and many trip hazards caused by the borders, pond, and uneven ground. The arrival of their first child encouraged the couple to get a new landscaped garden with artificial grass installations and patios and driveways—a space they could relax in and their children could play in.
When we were called in, the couple had a very rough idea of what they wanted, but after looking at our garden design options, they quickly changed tack. They were originally thinking of having a thin patio near the house with a semi-circle patio near their new garden office. However, they asked us to provide some garden landscaping designs to see what we would come up with, and they immediately preferred the neat, square look we proposed, with a wider patio near the house, a big open artificial lawn for their child to run around in, and a stylish stepping stone path leading to the garden office porch.
The customers had got a few quotes from other local landscape gardeners and had put together a list of questions they wanted to run past us before deciding who to choose—in particular, they were keen to know which artificial grass is the best and how artificial grass is laid down. We answered their questions, explaining what techniques we use (being LANTRA-approved artificial grass installers, we’re quite confident in this area!). Once the customers had chosen their preferred artificial grass and patio stone, we booked them in and began sourcing the materials. Once the job was underway, the first task was to organise a skip and clear away the old patio and garden, and then dig down to allow enough space for proper foundations and drainage. We then laid the patio slabs, stepping stone path, sleeper borders, artificial grass and decorative stone borders in that order.
There were a couple of challenges along the way. Firstly, the customer had already moved into his new garden office, so the electric and internet cables had already been laid. The electricians had left enough slack for us to move them around and work around them, but we still had to be very careful not to damage them. We dug channels for each cable and laid them neatly underground, with the internet cable also going under the patio to ensure the garden looked as neat and tidy as possible (the electricians had left pull strings inside the conduit so the cables could be replaced without the need to dig them up).
The second challenge was that the right-hand fence of the customer’s property wasn’t perfectly straight, in fact, their garden was almost 10cm wider at the far end than it was near the house. This meant that if we had laid the sleeper for the border perfectly in line with the fence, it would have made the garden look wonky and out of proportion. So instead, we ensured the sleeper was laid so that the garden looked perfectly square (because that’s where the eye is drawn to) and hid the 10cm variation in the decorative stone border where it was pretty much imperceivable.
We finished the job on time and within budget; it took a total of 3.5 days with our team of 3 expert landscape gardeners working flat out. The customers were extremely happy, in fact, they said the landscaped garden was better than they had imagined it could be and that they weren’t expecting such a ‘wow factor’. The quality of the fake lawn also exceeded their expectations; they even said that the artificial grass looked and felt better than any real grass they had experienced!
